But quite soon, general health and mental wellbeing start to decline. Going without food affects mood and the ability to think clearly – which can be especially dangerous in a crisis situation. Being prepared for a period without access to groceries is therefore a smart idea.
During a major power outage, our modern society is immediately affected.
Deliveries and the ability to keep goods fresh are disrupted right away. Today’s stores have little or no stock and rely on frequent deliveries. In the event of disruption, shelves empty quickly. Could you manage a week without restocking? A useful exercise is to live off what you already have at home for a week. Examples of long-lasting food include rice, pasta, beans, and dried berries and fruits. However, these are not designed for long-term storage and may spoil or lose nutritional value. Freeze-dried food, on the other hand, is made for this purpose and can last for at least 25 years, with guaranteed nutrition. Freeze-dried meals also offer more variety in taste and are very easy to prepare – just add water. Hot water gives the best results, but cold water also works.
At General Prepper you’ll find the widest range of freeze-dried food in the Nordics. To make it easier, we’ve sorted meals into gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, and lactose-free categories. You’ll also find freeze-dried breakfasts, main courses, desserts – and complete family rations.
Cooking
Although freeze-dried food can be prepared with cold water, the experience is far better with hot water. With a camping stove or emergency stove, you can easily heat water for cooking even when your regular stove doesn’t work. An emergency stove can be powered by liquid fuel or gas. Gas is especially efficient and safe, but always remember to use open flames only in well-ventilated areas.
