Sami Coffee Pouch in Reindeer leather

This is a fine piece of handcraft made in the Swedish part of Lapland inspired by the traditional Sami style of coffee bag. It is an ideal pouch for storing fire lighting materials or similar smaller items to be placed in a rucksack. It is a combination of being a piece of fine traditional handcraft, whilst the characteristics of the reindeer leather make it a superior leather for outdoor purposes being very durable whilst still being thin and very light weight.

The bag is made from 1.2 mm fully vegetable tanned (bark tanned) reindeer leather from freely grazing reindeer in Lapland. Vegetable tanning gives the leather a natural water repelling effect and is better for the environment than chromium tanning. The bag measures about 23cm (9 inches) x 11cm (4.33 inches) x 6cm (2.36 inches). The indigenous Sami people from Lapland traditionally used (and still use) leather bags made from their reindeer to store meat, coffee, salt and flour. For any trip outdoors this bag is therefore also an ideal size for bringing meat, salt or coffee, however could also be used for all kinds of other purposes. Even though it has been made for outdoor use it is also a very nice collectable item to just enjoy in itself.
