How does the Sawyer mini work?
Hollow Fiber Membrane Filter: Sawyer Mini contains a main component called "hollow fiber membrane." This filter consists of small hollow tubes or fibers, usually made of a material like polyethylene. These fibers have small pores that allow water molecules to pass through, but effectively block larger particles and microorganisms.
Filtration of Microorganisms: When using the Sawyer Mini, you connect it to a container (PET bottle) and press the water through the hollow fibers. As the water is forced through the filter, it penetrates the tiny pores of the hollow fibers. Microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoa and even some viruses, which are larger than the pore size, get stuck in the filter material and cannot pass through.
Purified Drinking Water: The purified water passes through the filter and comes out on the other side. This water is now safe to drink because the harmful microorganisms have been removed.
Use with Straw or Container: The Sawyer Mini can be used in different ways. You can either use it as a straw by sucking up water directly from the source or use it with a water container and then drink the water from the container. It is also possible to pair it with a water bag to filter and store a larger amount of water.
Cleaning and Maintenance: One of the benefits of the Sawyer Mini is that the filter cartridge can be cleaned and reused. If the filter becomes clogged with particles, you can simply rinse it with clean water and use the included syringe to clean the fibers.
